Beyond the popular juicy burgers, the Mission Fried Chicken has an ardent following. Like the original in San Francisco, Christian Albertson's restaurant in the shopping center kitty-corner from the Terra Linda Pool serves quaffable beers (like Pliny the Elder on tap), pub grub, and plenty of veg-forward offerings.

Like the original in San Francisco, Christian Albertson's restaurant in the shopping center kitty-corner from the Terra Linda Pool serves quaffable beers (like Pliny the Elder on tap), burgers, and pub grub to match the suds. The Mission Fried Chicken has an ardent following but there are plenty of veg-forward offerings, too. The mochi pancakes at brunch are not to be missed - try them with an Ettaler Heller Bock from Bayern, Germany.

Reflections on a 16 Year Run on 16th Street

Originally opened in December 2007, The Monk's Kettle has seen enormous changes in the Mission neighborhood, the craft beer scene, the restaurant industry, and the general business environment in SF. We outlasted four-plus presidential terms, the Great Recession, its recovery, the (third?) wave of the internet boom,a pandemic, and have been managing as well as we can during whatever time period you would call this.

Terra Linda's New Tavern and 7 Outdoor Beer Gardens to Try Right Now on marin living

When Christian Albertson moved to San Francisco in 2003 to be with a girl - now his wife - he met at his Boston college, the former brewpub manager soon realized that nobody in the Bay Area was really doing a true, quality beer bar. He mentioned to his friend Nat Cutler that he was thinking of opening his own beer bar and Cutler said, I've always wanted to do that. So in December 2007 the two - Cutler handling finance and Albertson managing beer and food - opened The Monk's Kettle in the Mission District, offering hard-to-find premier Belgian and French beers and much more. It was an instant success.

Flip open the slender leather-bound volume on the bar at Monk's Kettle and you're liable to find yourself awash in beers - but if you're like me and you haven't been swept up by the IPA craze and aren't sure what a Trappist is, never fear.

When Monk's Kettle started peddling upscale New American cuisine and fancy craft beer out of a former burger joint in San Francisco's Mission District, it was way, way ahead of the bougie, tech-driven curve. It was 2007, and the neighborhood had been dominated by dive bars and late-night taquerias for decades.

The chicken strips are juicy and crusty in all the right ways, but there's something else going on in my mouth. A hit of sugar, white pepper and cumin, then the numbness that comes with Szechuan peppercorns. The sensation is subtle, though a ramekin of ranch dressing is on the side for quick extinguishing.

Poor beer. No matter how many people say how special you are-Obama, Homer Simpson, the homebrew guy with the beard at your local pub-mention beer bar today and you can't help but think of those cheesy '90s brewpubs that popped up with the frequency of strip malls. They had the right spirit, just the wrong execution.
